How many thoughts do you need to think to make the most out of your day?

On an average day, roughly what percentage of your thinking is redundant, unhelpful, unhealthy and repetitive? In other words, thoughts that are not necessary for you to make the most out of your day.

And on an average day, roughly what percentage of your thinking is productive and helpful, so that you can achieve the most from your day?

Don’t get caught up working out these percentages, a rough estimate is enough.

Is your redundant, unhelpful, unhealthy and repetitive thinking greater than your productive and helpful thinking?  If so, this is time better spent having space in your mind, rather than thought in your mind. Instead of giving these negative thoughts your time and energy, just be present with what is. Whatever you are doing, stay with it. Be with the activity, people, place, food, drink, fresh air etc. whatever it is be present with it. This will create space in your mind, allowing any unproductive thinking to fall away.

After all, you don’t need to think anymore because you already know how much thinking is necessary to help you achieve the maximum from your day. Any more thinking is literally a waste of space, but worse still, these unhelpful thoughts get in the way of your productive thoughts, slowing down your daily progress.

So stop gorging on those thoughts that are standing in the way of you making the most of your day. Remember the percentage of productive thoughts you said you needed to think, in order to make the most out of your day? Well that’s all you need, most probably even less than that.

Be more, think less. Make the most of your day.

When is your ‘mental declutter day?’

When your mind gets too noisy (and you will know when this is because you will feel anxious, depressed or stressed by the unhelpful and unhealthy thoughts buzzing around in your head); then choose a day to do a mental declutter.

Don’t change what you are doing that day, simply choose to create space in your mind as much as you possibly can and for as long as you can all throughout the day.  This will weaken those unhealthy and unhelpful thoughts, so that they have less power to influence you. It’s a mental spring clean.

Create space in your mind whilst you lie in bed, take a shower, eat, drink, work, play etc. Whatever your day entails, consciously choose to let there be space in your mind as much as you can and for as long as you can. That’s all you have to do and your mind will feel less noisy by the end of your mental declutter day.

Your mind can get noisy, in the same way your home can get messy, your body can get sweaty and your clothes can get dirty. Have a mental declutter day when your mind is getting too noisy. It will feel like a breath of fresh and your mind will become more clearer, focused and intuitive.

Space holds beauty and destruction

Let the space in your mind hold thoughts that create beauty, not thoughts that destroy it. Empty space will hold whatever you choose. It will not judge or say no, it will simply let it be; in its’ perfect embrace, whether it is a work of art or destruction.

In your mind all thought will be given the space to flourish, space does not judge, it is true freedom, that is why it is so important to choose your thoughts wisely.

The thoughts that are standing in your way, the ones that are unhelpful to your life and unhealthy for your wellbeing, need space (awareness) so that they wither and fall to the wayside of your mind.  The space that holds these thoughts, is also the same space that can show them up for what they are, i.e. false and not you. The space in your mind has the power to weaken them until they are powerless to influence you.

Let us stop letting go of negative thoughts because this can be a tricky business. You let them go and they just waltz right back in, a few minutes, hours or days later. Instead drain these thoughts of their energy, weaken them, by creating space in your mind. That is all you need to do, the awareness will do the rest.

Let the the space in your mind and the space in your life be reserved only for beauty.

There is so very little for you to worry about

We spend a lot of our time worrying about the future, the place that does not even exist. By doing so we miss the space in our minds and the present moment. We think the more we worry, the more prepared we will be. Of course, it is sensible to plan and prepare for the future, but when we live the future in the present and are consumed for hours and days by a future that does not exist, then we are not living at all, in fact we are missing life. When we do this we are not planning and preparing ourselves for a future event, we are worrying about something that has not happened. To do so, is to suffer, when there is no suffering.

The future will always be unknown. It is only in the present moment that it will become known. There will always be uncertainty and that’s okay. In the words of John Allen Paulos, Professor of Mathematics, “Uncertainty is the only certainty there is”. So let us embrace it because no matter how much you think about the future, you will never know it, for the simple reason it does not exist!

When all your mind wants to do is worry about the future, let there be space in your mind instead and come to know how very little there is for you to worry about. It will guide you and give you reprieve, so that you don’t have to spend so much of your time and energy worrying. The space in your mind does not know how to let you down. It only knows the most optimum path for you at any single moment. Fall into its’ embrace. It is warm, peaceful, protective and free from worry.

If you are in a situation that is not good for your wellbeing, let the space in your mind guide you out of it

If you are in a situation that is not good for your wellbeing, let there be space in your mind and it will guide you out of it.

At this time don’t seek thought to help you, seek space. If only for a few seconds at a time, let there be space in your mind, where there is the thought about what is happening. It will give you peace when you need it most.

It is from this space that the thought to help you out of the situation, will arise. You will know this thought as having arisen out of the space in your mind because you will be at peace with it, all of it, even the uncertainty of it. If you are not at peace with the thought, it has not originated from you. So go back to space, for it knows only the most optimum life for you and will show you the way out.  It will give you freedom and peace first in your mind and then in your physical situation. Let space be your guiding light.

Nature is your portal to the space in your mind

Nature is your portal to the space in your mind. It will take you there when you can’t get there on your own. This is because nature is more connected to space, than we are; for the simple reason that nature does not think. Its’ second by second evolution is nothing less than spectacular and it happens without a single thought.

When you choose to create space in your mind, focus on nature.  Give nature your undivided attention, without thought. Watch it, hear it, feel it, smell it and observe its’ movement. Let go of the need to use words to describe it, just simply observe it. This will help create space in your mind.

Let us all create a little more space in our minds, so that we may know how truly spectacular we are.

Let there be more space in your mind and fewer thoughts

The more regularly you create space in your mind, the more space you will have in your mind overall. The key is to allow yourself to let there be space in your mind as often as you can throughout the day.  Even a few seconds at a time is enough.

Unlike traditional meditation, you don’t have to create space in your mind for a chunk of time once a day, but instead give your mind regular mini breaks as you go through your day. This is meditation on the go. It does not confine you to a physical space nor to a set amount of time. When, where and for how long you meditate (create space in your mind) is entirely up to you. There are no rules. There is only space in your mind, as and when you chose.

Also because the space in your mind is more powerful than thought, it becomes easier to maintain that space once created. This is because thought loses some of it strength in the face of space; so space rather than thought becomes dominant. Also, regularly grabbing seconds or minutes of tranquility here and there throughout your day means you are continuously creating space in your mind.  It is not just pushed to the beginning or end of your day.  In fact every time you do it, it is because at that moment you are choosing to do because you want it or need it most.

You only need a few thoughts in your mind to help you achieve what you wish in a day. The rest of your thinking is often redundant and repetitive and can be quietened by the space in your mind.

Gradually you begin to move towards having more space in your mind and fewer thoughts. This is true freedom. It is also absolute peace. To be all that you are, freedom and peace is all that is needed. Anything else is helpful.

Let there be space in your mind.

There are no more techniques, tools, methods or step-by-step programmes for you to learn. Yippee! There is only space in your mind

We have been led to believe that we need to ‘learn’ how to be our best self through the application of techniques, tools, methods, approaches and step by step programmes.

We have also been led to believe that meditation requires a quiet place, a period of time, closed eyes and a lotus position if possible.

But what if you already are your best self? What if you were born as your best self and that there was nothing for you to learn to be it. All  you had to do was to not think of yourself as thought.

What if there were no rules to meditation. You could, if you chose to, meditate as you walked, talked, ate, worked, laughed or played and you could meditate for as long or as little as you chose to.

What if letting there be space in your mind was all that was needed?  How much time and energy you would then have to learn and think about what the space in your mind guided you to, without getting caught up in learning how to be your best self?

We have been taught that improvement is all about learning, that is how you progress. But what if no learning had to take place for you to be and live your greatest self? What if  learning only came into the equation as an aid, helper or servant to your best self, but not as a means of reaching your best self?

What then?

You would come to be your best self in all areas of your life, at every moment in your life because you already are.

Positive thoughts can be mis-leading because you can mistake them for who you are

Positive thoughts can be mis-leading because you can think that positive thoughts are who you are because they’re favourable of you or your situation. On the contrary, they’re not favourable enough. Positive thoughts aren’t even the thin slice of who you are. They simply do not have the breadth nor the depth to define your greatness. Positive thoughts can only point to the greatness that you are, but they cannot define it.

The Buddha in the Shurangama Sutra uses the analogy of the finger pointing to the moon. If you focus on the finger  you will miss seeing the moon or mistake the finger for the gloriousness to which it points to.

A positive thought is like the pointing finger. It’s showing you the way, but the positive thought, just like the finger is not the magnificence to which it points to.

You are truly more powerful than any positive thought that you can think about yourself. You are the space in which that positive thought happens. You are truly MAGNIFICENT (and even MAGNIFICENT doesn’t do you justice. Your power and potential is greater than any thought you could ever have about yourself.

Let there be space in your mind.

How to declutter your mind

When you create space in your mind, you automatically declutter your mind.

There is nothing you have to do to declutter your mind. There is no technique to learn, no steps to follow or method to apply. You simply have to choose to let there be space in your mind.

I have read that if you write your thoughts down this declutters your mind, but I am not so sure. Thoughts are sneaky and dispelling them from your mind onto paper, can cause you to think about what you have written, so defeating the purpose of the exercise, but even more so because thoughts have a tendency to repeat themselves by re-entering your mental space, even after you have let them go.

We work hard to push unhealthy and unhelpful thoughts out of our minds which takes a lot of energy and feels like a battle. It is however, mental space that can suck the strength out of the thought, so that even if it re-enters your mind, it sits there powerless to influence you. You don’t have to try to get rid of it. The space in your mind will do all the work.

The more often you create space in your mind, the less power these thoughts have to swoop back in. This is because the space in your mind is awareness and your thoughts don’t like you to shine a light on them because it shows them up for what they are, i.e.that they are merely forms. They are not who you are.

The space lessens the hold that thoughts have over you. This is because the space separates the thought from you, demonstrating that you and the thought cannot be one and the same. There is space and there is your thought. In other words, you are not your thinking. You are what allows your thinking to be. You are truly powerful.

Your thoughts now have less power to waltz back into your mind because you no longer see the thought as you. The more space you have, the less chance your thoughts have to dominate your mind. Your thoughts lose the strength to re-enter your mental space, or if they do, they are too weak to influence you.

This is you decluttering your mind, simply by letting there be space in your mind.
